Gua Sha Body Massage

Gua Sha Body Massage

Chinese Gua Sha Body Massage is a traditional Chinese healing technique that involves scraping the skin with a smooth-edged tool to promote blood circulation and alleviate tension.

Gua Sha - pronounced gwahshah - comes from the Chinese word for scraping, while 'sha' means sand, referring to the sand-like appearance of petechiae. It has been used for years as a form of healing to ‘scrape’ away ‘blocked energy’ that can build up in the body and cause pain. In Chinese tradition, the ‘qi’ or ‘chi’ is an energy that flows through the body, and it must be balanced and flowing freely to ensure health and wellbeing. The practice of gua sha on the body is a way to release when the qi might be imbalanced. Interestingly, the goal in body gua sha is to create bruises and red and purple marks in order to relieve symptoms.

Gua sha is intended to address stagnant energy, called chi, in the body that practitioners believe may be responsible for inflammation. Inflammation is the underlying cause of several conditions associated with chronic pain.

The Treatment

Gua sha is a natural, alternative therapy that involves scraping your skin with a massage tool to improve your circulation. This ancient Chinese healing technique may offer a unique approach to better health, addressing issues like chronic pain.

In gua sha, your therapist scrapes your skin with short or long strokes to stimulate microcirculation of the soft tissue, which increases blood flow.

They will make these strokes with a smooth-edged instrument known as a gua massage tool. The therapist applies massage oil to your skin, and then uses the tool to repeatedly scrape your skin in a downward motion.
